Understanding PET Scan Technology

What is a PET Scan? 🔬

A Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan is a sophisticated nuclear medicine imaging technique that provides a window into the metabolic or biochemical function of your tissues and organs. Unlike MRI or CT scans, which primarily reveal anatomical structure, a PET scan highlights cellular activity.

This is achieved by injecting a small amount of a radioactive tracer, most commonly Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG), into the bloodstream. FDG is a type of sugar that cells use for energy. Areas with high metabolic activity—such as cancer cells, inflamed tissues, or active brain regions—absorb more of this tracer and “light up” on the resulting images, allowing radiologists to pinpoint disease at its earliest stages.

The PET Scan Procedure: A Step-by-Step Guide

Your Journey with Us

  1. Arrival & Preparation: Upon arrival, our team will review your medical history and recent reports. You’ll change into a comfortable gown.
  2. Tracer Injection: A small, safe dose of the radioactive tracer (e.g., FDG) is injected into a vein, typically in your arm. This is painless.
  3. Uptake Period (Resting): You will rest quietly in a calm room for about 60-90 minutes. This allows the tracer to circulate and be absorbed by your body’s cells. It’s important to remain still and relaxed.
  4. The Scan: You will lie on a comfortable table that slides into the donut-shaped PET scanner. The scan itself is silent and painless, lasting about 20-30 minutes. Our technicians will be in constant communication with you.
  5. Post-Scan: After the scan, you can resume normal activities. We advise drinking plenty of water to help flush the tracer from your system.

The Importance of the Serum Creatinine Test

Why is a Serum Creatinine Report Required Before a PET Scan? Kidney Health is Key! 🩺

A Serum Creatinine test is a simple blood test that measures how well your kidneys are functioning. This is a mandatory prerequisite for a PET/CT scan for two critical reasons:

  • Clearing the Tracer: The radioactive tracer used in the PET scan is naturally flushed out of your body by your kidneys. We need to ensure your kidneys are healthy enough to perform this task efficiently and safely.
  • CT Contrast Safety: Many PET scans are combined with a CT scan (PET/CT) that uses an iodine-based contrast dye to enhance anatomical details. This contrast dye is also filtered by the kidneys. In individuals with poor kidney function, the dye can pose a risk of further kidney damage.

Your safety is our top priority. A recent Serum Creatinine report (not older than 1 month) confirms your kidneys are fit for the procedure, ensuring a smooth and risk-free diagnostic experience.

How to Prepare for Your PET Scan

Patient Preparation Checklist

  • Fasting: Fast for at least 6-8 hours before your appointment.
  • Hydration: Drink plenty of plain water. Avoid juices, coffee, tea, and other sweetened drinks.
  • Medication: Take your regular medications unless advised otherwise by your doctor. If you are diabetic, please discuss your insulin/medication schedule with us when booking.
  • Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal zippers or buttons.
  • Avoid Strenuous Activity: Refrain from heavy exercise for 24 hours before the scan, as this can affect the tracer distribution.
  • Bring Documents: Please bring your doctor’s prescription, previous medical reports (especially old PET, CT, MRI scans), and your recent Serum Creatinine report.

Fasting Guidelines in Detail

Fasting is crucial for an accurate FDG-PET scan. When you fast, your body’s normal cells switch to using fat for energy, but cancer cells continue to crave sugar (glucose). This makes them absorb the FDG tracer much more intensely, creating a high contrast on the scan and making them easier to detect.

  • Permitted: Plain Water Only.
  • Not Permitted: Food, Chewing Gum, Mints, Coffee, Tea, Juice, Soda.
  • Diabetic Patients: Special instructions are required. Please contact our center for personalized guidance on managing your blood sugar and medication before the scan.
